  • Women’s Health did some investigating to answer all your biggest questions about the mysterious man behind the brand.
  • Netflix just dropped its much-anticipated documentary, White Hot: The Rise And Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch, which details the rise and fall of preppy clothing store Abercrombie & Fitch, including its controversial CEO Mike Jeffries.

Jeffries led the mega-popular brand to great success in the ’90s and early 2000s. And he is also credited in the doc for its meteoric downfall as a result of exclusionary and discriminatory hiring and marketing practices. The new film explores the company’s history under Jeffries’ leadership.

Jeffries, who is now 77, ultimately stepped down as CEO in 2014. Since then, he’s virtually disappeared from public life.

So…What’s he doing now? The former CEO has kept things prettyyyy quiet over the past few years, but Women’s Health did some digging. Here’s what you need to know:

What happened to CEO Mike Jeffries?

Jeffries said some pretty controversial things during his tenure at Abercrombie & Fitch, and the documentary explores his influence there (note: he declined to participate in the filming).

In a 2006 profile, Jeffries said that the company was exclusionary on purpose, going “after the cool kids” with its marketing. That, he said, was why the company didn’t make plus sizes.

Company employees were also required to have a very specific look. In the documentary, Christopher Clayton, a former Abercrombie & Fitch recruiter says, “You have to recruit good-looking people. ‘This is what good-looking looks like.’ We literally had a book.”

That guide specifically said that classic, natural hairstyles were good, but dreadlocks on men and women were not okay, Clayton said. It also stressed that men could not wear gold chains and women could only wear subtle jewelry.

In 2015, the company lost a legal battle at the Supreme Court that dealt with discrimination against a job applicant who wore a headscarf (the headscarf apparently conflicted with their employee “look” policy), per The Daily Beast.

The controversies kept rolling in for the company, including multiple allegations against Abercrombie & Fitch for racism and even sexual misconduct.

    He’s retired.

That’s the word from Business Insider. In 2014, the outlet reported that Jeffries was stepping down from his leadership role at Abercrombie & Fitch after decades at the company.

“It has been an honor to lead this extraordinarily talented group of people,” Jeffries said in a statement at the time. “I believe now is the right time for new leadership to take the company forward in the next phase of its development.”

    Jeffries off-loaded his Manhattan townhouse.

He dramatically dropped the asking price of his Manhattan townhouse from $19.5 million to $16 million in 2017. The townhouse appears to have finally been sold in September of 2018 for just $12 million, according to Zillow.

Elle Décor described his pad as a vine-covered townhouse featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, polished nickel, and rooms covered in mirrors. The master bedroom also had mirrored walls, a master dressing room with walls of custom-designed mirrored closets, and two bedrooms with mirrored bathrooms.

He’s stayed out of the spotlight.

It’s hard to find any record of what Jeffries is up to these days, and that seems to be by design. Jeffries does not appear to have a public LinkedIn, Twitter, or Instagram account.

He still has an active professional Facebook account, but the most recent (and only existing) post is from 2012 when he joined the site.

It’s unclear if he’s still with Matthew Smith.

Part of Jeffries’ downfall has been linked to his relationship with longtime partner Matthew Smith, who ran The Jeffries Family Office, a Limited Liability Corporation, or LLC, set up for Jeffries’ private interests, according to BuzzFeed News.

Smith also reportedly reviewed internal Abercrombie & Fitch documents but had no official role in the company, causing internal controversy.

Jeffries had a lot of plastic surgery.

Even though Jeffries didn’t participate in the documentary, the film did note that he’s had a lot of plastic surgery since leaving the company.

However, details of what, exactly, work he’s done are hard to find.

His net worth is still pretty impressive.

Jeffries still owns nearly three percent of shares in Abercrombie & Fitch, according to Celebrity Net Worth. His net worth is reportedly $300 million.
