Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez says she almost hit rock bottom and quit showbiz after she was derided for having a curvy bum.

The 52-year-old said she achieved fame at a time when the ideal body for a celebrity was skinny, and this contributed to pushing her to the verge of giving up her dreams of stardom.

She said: “There were many times where I was just like, ‘I think I’m just going to quit’. I had to really figure out who I was. And believe in that and not believe in anything else.

“When I started working, the beauty ideal was very thin, blonde, tall, not a lot of curves. I grew up around women with curves so it was nothing I was ever ashamed of.

“It was hard, when you think people think you’re a joke – like a punchline. But it wound up affecting things in a way that I never intended.”

Lopez added in her new Netflix documentary Halftime that her fiance, the actor Ben Affleck, was shocked at the scrutiny she was under due to her figure.

Affleck, 49, is seen on the film saying about Lopez, also known as J.Lo: “I said to her once, ‘Doesn’t this bother you?’ And she said: ‘I’m Latina, I’m a woman, I expected this’.”

The documentary also follows Lopez in early 2020, and covers how she was furious that she was forced that year to split her Super Bowl half-time performance with Shakira, 45.

The singer also expressed anger at her having to share a Super Bowl half-time slot with Shakira

She is quoted as saying: “This is the worst idea in the world to have two people do the Super Bowl. It was the worst idea in the world.”

Entertainment Weekly reported that Lopez’s manager Benny Medina also voiced frustration at the decision in a separate interview, saying: “Typically, you have one headliner at a Super Bowl.

“That headliner constructs a show, and, should they choose to have other guests, that’s their choice. It was an insult to say you needed two Latinas to do the job that one artist historically has done.”

Lopez’s frustrations are directed at the organisers rather than her counterpart Shakira, who she discusses set timings with in another scene.
