Cardi first initially became notoriety as a Vine and Instagram star. She was a normal part of the VH1 reality program “Love & Hip: New York.” Cardi B’s profession took off in 2017 with her track “Bodak Yellow.”

Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar was born in Manhattan on October 11, 1992, and raised in the Bronx. She is the child of a Dominican father and a Trinidadian mother. 

She has seven siblings, the most famous of whom is Henessy Carolina. Cardi B started stripping at the age of 19, seeing it as a beneficial experience: “really rescued me from several situations. When I began stripping, I returned to school.” She first enrolled at Borough of Manhattan Community College before leaving out.

Cardi B made her musical debut in November 2015, just before she announced her departure from “Love & Hip Hop.” She featured Jamaican dancehall musician Popcaan on Shaggy’s remix of his track “Boom Boom.” 

In December 2015, she released her first music video, “Cheap Ass Weave,” a cover of rapper Lady Leshurr’s “Queen’s Speech 4.” Cardi B released her first longer project, the mixtape “Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1,” in March 2016. 

She appeared on the 2016 compilation album “Underestimated: The Album,” which she collaborated on with fellow KSR Group artists HoodCelebrityy, SwiftOnDemand, Cashflow Harlem, and Josh X. 

DURING THIS PERIOD, Cardi B continued to grow her fame and fan base with appearances on programs such as Charlamagne Tha God’s “Uncommon Sense” and Khloe Kardashian’s “Kocktails with Khloe.”

Her big break occurred in February 2017, when she secured a recording deal with Atlantic Records, a prominent musical company. She had only debuted her second mixtape, “Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 2,” the previous month (Jan. 2017).

She was nominated for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Best New Artist at the 2017 BET Awards but did not win either. However, she did perform at the BET Awards Afterparty. She was later featured on the cover of The Fader’s July/August 2017 Summer Music edition.

Cardi B signed with Atlantic Records and released her commercial breakthrough song “Bodak Yellow” on June 16, 2017. She performed on “The Wendy Williams Show” to promote it. 

Cardi B became the initial female rapper to achieve number one with a solo single since Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1998 as the song progressively ascended the charts, eventually peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list in September 2017.

“Bodak Yellow,” dubbed “the rap anthem of the summer” by an editor at The New York Times, was certified septuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. 

It was also nominated for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the 60th Grammy Awards and won the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards’ Single of the Year.

Cardi B’s first studio album, “Invasion of Privacy,” was released to widespread acclaim in April 2018. Cardi B became the foremost female artist to chart 13 songs concurrently on the Billboard Hot 100, when each song from the album debuted on the April 21 list. 

The RIAA certified it double platinum in October 2018. Time and Rolling Stone magazines both voted “Invasion of Privacy” the year’s finest album, and Time also selected Cardi B to its annual list of the world’s 100 most important people.
